ROCK ‘N’ BOWL MUSIC

By John Hayward

The traditional sound of leather on willow was usurped at Owermoigne Cricket Club last Saturday evening by the altogether more raucous din of classic Rock ‘n’ Roll.  But local residents had no cause to complain about the racket – most of them were in attendance and rocked until midnight to raise funds for Dorchester Hospital’s Kingfisher Children’s Ward.

The event, organised by local resident Derek Bolt, raised over £150 for the good cause and provided a great evening of entertainment as Swanage band The Refrains, supported by local rockers Clos2Me, thrilled the audience with cover versions of hits from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.  The Refrains, with their country ‘n’ western sound and distinctive close harmony vocals lending a touch of originality to well-known classics, had the audience on their feet in no time.  Led by the vocally gifted Tara Dominick, the band thundered through an eclectic mix of hits like Do You Wanna Dance, Stuck In The Middle With You and I Fought the Law.

The bluesier sound of Clos2Me, strengthened by the last-minute guest appearance of sax player Clive Ashley of the Ashley Brothers, also went down well with the crowd.  Jeremy Rowe on lead guitar seemed to relish the opportunity to play with such an accomplished musician and turned in a succession of superb solos.

Organiser and local resident, Derek Bolt said: ‘It was a fantastic evening and everybody really got into the spirit of things.  It was great to see so many people come down and raise money for the hospital.’
